What is an ELT?
An ELT is a battery-powered radio transmitter mounted in a crash-resistant housing in the rear of an aircraft. When triggered by a significant shock, the transmitter begins broadcasting to one or more of a series of orbiting satellites. The satellites automatically alert ground-based Search and Rescue stations, which dispatch rescue aircraft towards the radiating beacon. As the technology has evolved the circle of uncertainty of the beacon location has improved from 20 km radius to 100 meters.
